Got me Corsa on Saturday
Goes wrong on Sunday

Symptons (HELP!)

Driving at 60mph in 5th and hear a loud tapping noise from engine.
Car revs drop and I put my foot down and shite all happerns. Not 1 rev.
Car starts steaming
Roll to a stop.
Re-start car - Still won't rev and idles dreadful.
Battery runs dead.
ECU light illuminates.

Booked in to see Vauxhall on Thursday. Gonna cost a bomb.

Anyone have a clue what could have happerned? It's a 1.4 16v.

do the paper clip test on the ECU to read the fault code, there is a how to in the tutorials, it work i have used it.
My GSI went on the vauxhall fault finder then i found out about the paper clip method and tried it and the same fault code was read, where was the steam coming from you checked for oil in ya water, and white gunk under the oil fill cap

The steam was coming from the (drivers view) left side of the bonnet.
The engine is well oiled (?) and lubed. Although it has been sitting for 2 weeks in a garage. RAC bloke didn't have a clue.

Well the cars overheating, and running rough at idle could be that the head gasket has gone, or simply that the thermostat is bust and not opening to let water into the rad???? could be loads of things, sounds like the steam is coming from where the header tank is, did it blow the cap off the tank, you losing water???? have a look in the header tank for an oily slick on top of the water

The water is in the beige container with black cap right?
Top of engine bay?
If so the liquid was brown when I looked in there.
How much for a new head gasket?

that sounds like you looked in the brake fluid if its brown????
It has a yellow cap next to the battery, head gaskets are expensive, you might have to get the head skimed your probably looking at about £200. It might not be though fingers crossed it aint

Yes the Cam belt runs the water pump. BTW greasemonkey, due to software changes after 1997 facelift, paperclip test does not work on any corsas.

Could perhaps be that you either have little/no coolant in the expansion tank (big round plastic container with yellow cap), or as others have said, your head gasket is gone.

Assuming you have enough coolant in the expansion tank, check underneath the yellow cap, is there any white mayonnaise-like substances on there?

Sounds like maybe head gasket. Oil wouldn't account for steam. Dunno why head gasket would cause a tapping noise.

After 99 it dont work.
Mines a 98 sport and it works ok.
Just connect pins 5+6

The 97 to 99 cars give out 4 digit codes instead of the 2 digit ones.
A full list is available at On Board Diagnostics
