Tell them to get fecked, its a Vauxhall, they are the Vauxhall dealership, they cant just give it back saying we dont know! They have to find the fault with it! If they refuse get onto Vaux head office or something.

Sounds like maybe head gasket. Oil wouldn't account for steam. Dunno why head gasket would cause a tapping noise.

Could perhaps be that you either have little/no coolant in the expansion tank (big round plastic container with yellow cap), or as others have said, your head gasket is gone.

what about the oil pump knackered? he heard a loud tapping noise which might be the hydraulic lifters right?

Yes the Cam belt runs the water pump. BTW greasemonkey, due to software changes after 1997 facelift, paperclip test does not work on any corsas.

Snapped aux belt - causing the coolant pump to stop (overheat + damage) and altenator to stop spinning & charging (dead battery) ???

Well the cars overheating, and running rough at idle could be that the head gasket has gone, or simply that the thermostat is bust and not opening to let water into the rad???? could be loads of things, sounds like the steam is coming from where the header tank is, did it blow the cap off the tank, you losing water???? have a look in the header tank for an oily slick on top of the water

The steam was coming from the (drivers view) left side of the bonnet.
