Why does my car run so much better with a full tank than with a 1/4 full one?

Always seems faster and smoother after fill up.

Apparently it's not good to run the car till there's hardly any petrol left, even tho I do, but 1/4 tank shouldn't be any worse...

more petrol in tank, more gravity to push the fuel down, less strain on fuel pump, this was a theory told to me by a russian sheep farmer

I thought that but... does the fuel get fed from the bottom of the fuel tank of from the top of the fuel level via a float?

Your theory holds if it's fed from the bottom.

If it IS fed from the bottom why do people always say not to run your car down and use the crap dirty fuel.... You'd be sucking the dirt first and then the stuff on top.

the majority of the crap you get is from old rust filler necks etc, and inner tanks rusting

this is not as common anymore in modern cars

if you go to a reputable garage (i.e. not farmer jim shack) then you wont get dirt from the actual pump either
