as above......

which one out of the two would you recommend and why?

Alpine MRD-M1000 £420
or
JL Audio 500/1 £600

i'm planning on using either one of these amps to power a jl10w6v2
This sub takes 500rms@4ohms

sub
400rms (500rms optimum performance)
dual 4ohm load only

The specs for the amps are.....

Alpine:

1 x 1800 Watts Max.
1 x 500 Watts RMS @ 4 OHM @ 14.4v.
1 x 1000 Watts RMS @ 2 OHM @ 14.4v.
1 x 350 Watts RMS @ 4 OHM @ 12v.
1 x 700 Watts RMS @ 2 OHM @ 12v.

Frequency Response 20Hz-200Hz.
Signal/Noise Ratio 90dB.
Low Pass Filter Adjustable 30-200Hz.
1/12 Oct Subsonic Filter 15-50Hz.

JL

>95dB below rated power
Frequency Response:
5 Hz-500 Hz (+0, -1dB)
Damping Factor:
>500 @ 4 ohm/50 Hz

switchable from 200mV-2V RMS
to 800mV-8V RMS
Dimensions:
13.4"L x 9.25"W x 2.36"H
Features: Differential-Balanced Input Topology:
(1 pair of inputs)
On-board Crossover:
fully-variable (40-200 Hz),
selectable-slope LP (12 or 24 dB per octave)
Preamp Output:
2-channel (independent active filter, parallel with amp filter or full-range)
Bass EQ:
parametric with variable boost up to 15dB and Remote Bass Control (optional)
Infrasonic Filter:
fully-variable 24dB/octave from 15-60 Hz
Signal-Sensing Turn-On:
permits operation without remote lead
Dual mono speaker output connections:
accept up to 8ga. wire +
12V and Ground connections:
accept up to 4ga. Wire

Pros and cons so far....

Alpine
Pros: lower price, increase in power when impendance is reduced, digital display, scope for futher upgrade
cons: large size, claimed power figures (500rms) only availible at 14v, only 1/12db octave

JL
Pros: very flexible in terms of fine tuning, 500rms at varible power load from 11.5-14.5v, compact size, 24db octave, S/N ratio 95db
cons: high price, limited to 500rms whatever impendance, not ideal for upgrade in future.

Which amp (taking into consideration the above) would you buy and why?
i'm edging closer to the jl personally but the price is a real big factor

which other monoblocks would suit my requirements between £300-£600?
i'm after a good level of SQ, i dont want raw power without the quality.
must have sufficient power for sub quoted

any help is GREATLY appreciated

cheers
Alex

If the sub is a dual 4 Ohm sub then it will be showing the amp either a 2ohm or 8ohm load(depending on how u wire it), NOT a 4ohm one.

Thusly the alpine will be giving out its rated 1000 RMS not 500. It may be too powerful for the sub??

alpine will kill the sub, get the jl, they are matched for each other anyway.

thanks for all your opinions so far.

i called cel-direct today. they recommended using the jl audio 500/1 for the w6v2, which i do agree with as like kris mentioned they are designed for each other.

the guy on the phone said that with such a good quality sub, you have to use something that will match that quality - a valid point IMO

he also said that a cheap jap amp like alpine (no disrespect, i do like alpine myself) will not do the job and would be pointless in buying for that particular sub.

with that coment it did make me wonder why alpine offer their amps for much lower prices?!?

reasons i should go for the jl...

1, the amp offers a better level of SQ especially as it has so many options for fine tuning.
2, the rated power is and always will be rated at 500rms thanks to the RIP system. (http://www.jlaudio.com/amps/rips.html)
3, they are a matched pair and jl would have taken this into consideration when designing both products.
4, its very compact size.

the only thing i have against the amp is the asking price - £600!
but i suppose thats what you have to pay for such quality.

my other option is genesis....

i know they are gods for sonic perfomance. i have also just seen an amp, namely the profile sub amp. (mono block)
http://www.genesis-ice.com/Home/Specifications/Monoblock_Spec/monoblock_spec.html

this amp retails for £350 which is a very good price IMO.

i dont think that this amp has as many features as the jl but if they are reknowed for their SQ, so what more do i need tweak?

so the next big question..........

jl or genesis?

what do you boys and gals think?

thanks for the input so far! dont leave me like this!!!

p.s i'm getting the genesis stereo 100 for my comps so to have another genesis amp would be a good idea, as i would have matching amps.

All three amps are fine and VERY good quality! Personally and people will call this biased but I dont agree with the statement about the alpine amp. Just wire it at 4ohms with the JLsub and then at least in the future if you did get a 2ohm sub you'll be able to feed it properly. The Alpine amp has more features than the 500/1! I have had two of their accuclassD monoblocks running in my motor for a year now and they are the nuts! I DO NOT see how an amp can be more SQ than another, signal to noise ratio has a SMALL part to play but when youre powering subs it will not make ANY difference. Go with the Alpine and save some cash, I promise you, you will not be dissapointed at all. My mate Kevin sold his 500/1 and bout a M1000 instead to power his JL W7.

Genesis yes very nice, the bling of bling but I think they are over-priced for what they are. They are VERY well built and ive NEVER heard about one failing.
