 | synology or qnap, from experience I'd steer clear of zyxel and thecus. Buffalo stuff is usually cheap and reasonable. Depends if you want any extra features etc

 | I'm after one myself

Buffalo looked good although slightly over budget - £170 ish for a 2 x 2Gb which can do RAID 1 mirror.

 | I've got a WD mycloud unit. it isn't set up for RAID 1 mirror but can be. You can also buy them as duo units with two discs already set up. Found it easy to use and can access it from mobile, home or if I'm attached to a different network. No idea on price though as this was a gift from the bro in law.

 | I grabbed a WD My Cloud Mirror on eBay last week when they had their 20% discount code on. Got a 2 x 4Tb which I'm using in RAID 1 for £260 delivered.

This, Synology has the edge imo but not a lot in it.
