one news report on the radio here this morning said that Russian separatists had stolen a surface to air missile launcher from the Ukrainian army a few weeks ago. Apparently they have shot down a couple of Ukrainian military aircraft which had been kept quiet. Unfortunately i didnt hear where the source of this info was so can't provide a link.

Just watching a documentary now. They reckon pro Russian separatists shot it down thinking it was a Ukrainian military plane. They have played intercepted radio communication between some rebels as they arrived at the scene. They were searching the wreckage saying they are 100% sure that it was a civilian flight. Someone asked if there is any documents and what they say. Some dude says yes, it's Malaysian airlines, what were they doing in Ukrainian airspace? Next thing some dude says that they must have been carrying spies as there is a war going on and they had no business being on that flight path.

They did say the recordings were supplied by the Ukrainians so how true it is is any bodies guess.

Sounds plausible that they've claimed responsibility thinking it was military then changed their mind when they established that it was civil.

Lucky for them it wasn't US or probably UK, any excuse to march in and ask questions later.

Although I wouldn't put it past either side to do it and blame the other, get a bit of shit going on.

Not much oil there though, so that sounds less likely.

'Ever' is probably being over dramatic but the UK, and the rest of Europe tbh, aren't going to put up much of a fight as we're massively dependant on Russia's energy supplies. And no one (perhaps China but they're pretty chummy with Russia) really has the financial backing nor fire-power to up against Russia plus, who want's to start another cold-war?

Add to the above that Putin is a fucking nutter and China is a bit volatile and you have the recipe for world disaster.

Going to war with Russia for supplying weapons to rebels isn't going to happen IMO. It would also be extremely hypocritical of us to do so!

pretty sure you cant just nick an anti air, jump in, turn the key and fire it, especially as its only 1 of 3 part system to operate?

even so, if they had used the radaring system surly this airliner was pinging back to the rader as an airliner as opposed to military?or maybe the old soviet junk isnt that clever and hence it shot on sight

If it was a BUK that was used then it can be operated in 'stand-alone' mode but it only has a simple friend-or-foe system on board which isn't able to distinguish between military and civilian targets.

The USA would just cease trading with countries that traded with them, until eventually a US hand picked government was elected (like Sadam) and then USA would buy their oil for pennies as part of the agreement not to wipe them off the face of the earth

Tbh I agree with both johnboosh and Russ here.

It could happen in theory, but won't in practice as it's just ridiculous.

World leaders don't think like normal people. They want whats best for them and their country in terms of resources, not revenge. Going to war with Russia is not in anyones best interests as it's an absolutely ridiculous thing to do, which will probably end up in the allied countries being wiped off the map.

What worries me is Russia's giving these nutters gear like this how long till this stuff is sold to the likes of taliban etc to fund other gear. If terrorists can knock a passenger plane out the air from the ground it'll be a game changer.

Ps compared to all the allied countries Russia isn't a super power really is it, not even compared to just USA tbh.
