Through work and Salary Exchange I can get a a range of stuff, in this instance any of the above. Comes out of your wages every month, about £30 a time. Tax free etc.

Now I have a 2.5yr old Dell Studio laptop, and to be honest there is nothing wrong with it but I always wished I had got a Mac but couldn't justify the cost.

As an example I can get a 13" Macbook for £745 and the new iPad Mini becomes £230.

So do I go for the iPad Mini (which I would have bought had the price been £200 like the rumours) or do I take the opportunity to buy a MacBook?

You'll use the Mac more, imo.

I'd take a look at the 11" before considering it. It really is quite small. Too small, imo, for a laptop.

13" is where it's at.

I thought the bottom end one was 256GB now in the 13" varient, I guess not. 128GB really isn't enough - a friend has one and has to be quite careful with it where as I got the 256GB one and just use it as normal. I'm not a massive hoarder of movies and musc though, I have a NAS for that anyway.

If the 256GB one is out of your price range, why not take a look at the 13" MacBook Pro?

We had something similar at work. They tried to use it to get us to pay for our work replacement laptops but putting off the 'standard' replacement cycle. It got canned after 1 year due to so low take-up.

One of the big questions is how much do you pay at the end. Its meant to me a market value for it which on a mac could be quite high. You also don't own it until you do buy it out at the end of the lease.

So the prices above aren't actually what you pay, there's something to pay at the end of it?

Doesn't it work like Cycle To Work - you pay full price but the money is taken out before tax and NI so you get a saving. It has to be classed as a rental for this to work and it's up to the employer if they charge you at the end to 'transfer ownership' as there can be no guarantee of ownership at the end for it to work?

My dad has bought bikes and is about to buy another.

Pay in installments, before tax and ni as Ed says. Then at end you have paid off thats it.

I am not sure if computers are any different, but I wouldn't have thought so?

If you're going to get an iPad get the proper one instead of the Mini.
