Quite abit of it is debris from valves tbh..

Incan clean up with magnet, and solvent Incan use aswell?

why not just replace for peace of mind? its not worth something risking to be honest, are they out of a failed engine?

They aren't standard pistons and would rather keep cost down ideally. From
A c20xe engine thT had its woodruff key snap and bent 16valves

There's always going to be the chance of a bit of wekened metal chipping out when running. If it wasn't the top of a piston I'd be suggesting dressing the marks out with emory paper. I wouldn't be risking using them/ it

replace them, as barnshaw says not worth the risk,

could spend ages rebuilding the engine for a bit of the piston to break off after the first turn of the key and then have to rebuild again

not worth keeping them. you've spent so much on the car so may aswell spend some more than risk ruining the engine again.

I reused mine after a similar piston/valve head butting session but I had no fragments in the bores, just some slight marking on the top.

At the very least I'd be dropping the pistons out to ensure the bores are clean.

They look fine, I reused mine on my 172 after a slipped timing belt, the marks will clean up.

There's no nasty marks on yours either, keep them.

I've fixed hunrededs of cars with broken belts, snapped woodruff keys and never changed the pistons. The folk saying change them obviously don't have a clue.

This is why John, it's good to get opinions.

I was asking because I didn't know.

Just like the thread in help, I was bei told to tey different things by lots of different people. If I dot know, obviously makes sense to
Me to try the easier things that have been suggested.

I have some people here saying keep some saying replace. I will have to ignore SOMEBODY'S advice

Plus it looks like a bit of a valve guide on the top of the piston in the second pic. Its more than likely they will all be damaged

Yeah, the valve guides and valves(obviously) will all be replaced.

I can get fragments off pistons with a magnet. I that makes easier for you to see

Just get all of the bits off of the top of the pistons and that's all you need to do. They will be fine. It's honestly something I wouldn't be worrying about

piss taker.

i work in a factory where engines are produced. i'm sick of the sight of them.

i regularly go over and have a look at my mate stripping down fucked engines and seeing the damage caused. usually it's one small part that causes big damage, hence why i wouldn't risk pistons that could be fucked on an engine build that generation has spent thousands of his hard earned on.

Ok then you obviously know everything so I shall start changing the pistons every time I repair a car with a broken belt. I thought I should have known this after nearly 10 years of being a mechanic...

With this kind of damage I have seen problems with engines burning oil due to the ring lands closing up ad pinching the rings due to the valve impact. Also in one case i have seen a rebuilt engine suffer from Conrod failure having been rebuild from a Cambelt failure.
Those are worse case, what pistons are they? Chances are you will have no problems.

Chances are they will be fine - it will be worth removing them, cleaning them properly and checking for distortion in the ring lands, any cracks etc.

if theres any major damage on top that could cause hotspots, andy cracks or distortion chuck them, if not - reuse
