These stepped noses really do look horrible, but I expect we'll be used to them by the end of the year. I hope so, anyway

Some fucking ugly nose cones this year!

Looking forward to seeing redbulls car tbh,

hope they havn't gone for this bloody stepped front!

I'm hoping they have gone similar to McLaren so that when they're showing the front-runner action it will be a break from the horrible stepped fronts

I noticed earlier that the Ferrari hasn't got any TV cameras on the front So presumably the front will change a bit before the race.

I think another reason that these stepped nose designs don't look so good is that they don't taper along the sides at all (like McLaren) so the sides being flat up to the sidepods doesn't look that great.

Oh yeah, Lotus launched their car about 15 mins ago. F1Fanatic won't load though, presumably too many people trying to get on and look at pics is my guess

It looks like a lot of teams will go with the 'bump' to save having to redesign and homologate a complete new tub to fit in with the new nose height rule. McLaren's tubs are a lot lower compared to other teams hence them able to 'curve' the nose. Although as said, the 'bump' doesn't affect aero; still trying to work that one out

Although Ferrari's noise is pretty squared compared to other launched cars -




However RBR's launch tomorrow, been interesting to see what they've done with the nose although iirc RB7's tub was a fair amount taller than McLaren's so i'm going with some sort of bump/lip.

Rb8 was revealed at 1pm is got a different take on the stepped nose only a video of it on www.redbullracing.com new sauber looks good though

Anyone else a bit worried that Mclaren have got it wrong by not going with the stepped nose seeing as everyone else has?

I know they had quite a low nose anyway but still...

Nope, it would have been a major set back if they raised their nose. As said, McLaren have a lower tub that most teams and they would have had to redesign the whole tub/chassis and loose a fair few years worth of development if they went with the 'bump' nose.
Clearly teams found the effects of having a 'bump' nose outweighs them having to redo tub/chassis and get the whole lot homologated again.

That's one way of looking at it, but I guess it could go either way and they could have an advantage based on their low bulkhead last season.

If the bump-nose had anything to offer, surely teams would have tried it last year as the regulations would have allowed having a McLaren low nose and an "everyone else" high bulkhead.

The bumpnose is a compromise, nobody wanted to alter their chassis enough and McLaren already had a chassis which would work - so it could be advantage McLaren.

Mercedes apparently were working on something similar last year - http://scarbsf1.wordpress.com/2011/10/21/mercedes-f-duct-front-wing

IIRC Mercedes were also working on a steering column activated 'F-duct' where a sleeve moved over a 'hole - turning the steering wheel would cover the 'hole' and in turn activate the 'f-duct', with the steering wheel straight the hole would be uncovered and air would flow out of the column.
I'm sure Scarb did an article on this (can't find it though) and it was pretty impressive, although it was a bit of a grey area on whether the driver operated it or not.

Yeah I read about the Merc system towards the end of the season, the little hole on the nose of the Merc kept opening and closing through the seasons (some races it was blanked off, some practise sessions it was open, etc) and it raised a few eyebrows back then.

It clearly didn't do much good though

Interesting, I wonder if this F-duct type system will be implemented by other teams later on in the season. When McLaren first used the F-duct, the rest of the field could not implement it as efficiently due to regulations regarding structural change to the chassis.

I think McLaren wont be hindered by this whole stepped nose thing at all. They have a history of running cars with low noses which have won world championships.
