"Gradi won four promotions during his time in charge of Crewe.

He was also responsible for producing a number of players who would go on to be internationals, including David Platt, Geoff Thomas, Neil Lennon, Rob Jones, Robbie Savage, Danny Murphy, Seth Johnson, David Vaughan and Dean Ashton, bringing in around £25m for the club."

Is that really enough to show for 26 years as manager and 2 as director of football

Granted, a club the size of Crewe when he took over but could he not have done more? Just doesnt seem like that much in that period when you look at what other clubs have achieved etc. :S

Didn't see this coming. Thought they'd find him dead in a dugout one day. Easy to say he should've done more but, players were sold from under him, then I'm sure cavey or Ryan? will confirm he was getting profits from player sales too

Not even a slight surprise that Utd fans haven't heard of him tbh. I mean he's only been at the same club, mainly as manager since I was born 28 years ago.

The guy had done amazing things for a club like Crewe, took us to top ten in the Championship... (and then back down again) and produced some brilliant players.

In fairness, the players weren't sold from under him, he moved them on as he knew his place. He was there to produce quality players, and shift them on for big profits to keep the club alive. (and as Russ said, and i'm sure Ryan will confirm, he got a fairly decent share of the profits as well) But he did make them one of the few profitable clubs in any of the leagues which isn't to be knocked.

He moved up to football director a few years back when we got Thordarson as manager, that lasted a couple of years and he went back to managing.

Ryan will be happy, he said this should happen, and needed to happen for Crewe to move forward again, instead of being 6 points above oblivion in a shit league.

(would of replied to this earlier, but apparently my Vodafone don't do 3g in Derby, or my settings are wrong now i've transferred my number over)

No Guy Roux.

Seriously though, massive achievement at a club the size of Crewe.

He took Crewe to the Championship. They are a similar if not smaller club than us so that is a terrific achievement in itself.

What other clubs are you comparing it to Robbo?

Wigan probs not such a great example due to DW's money but you look at the teams whove come up to the prem from the lower tiers at times... Swindon for example up to the prem from bottom division after an enforced relegation, down in league 2 now. bradford, barnsley, blacvkpool, swansea etc. - lots of examples of clubs whove come up to the prem but whove also moved around a lot, 4 promotions in almost 30 years really isnt that great is it?

Are you really comparing Crewe to clubs the size of Bradford, Barnsley, Blackpool and Swansea?

They are a L1/L2 side at best, and hes had them up to the Championship, and around L1 for most of it.

I hope Wigan was a joke too

Cool. I have no desire to know about teams and managers that my team doesn't play against.

Swindon are much bigger than Crewe. Bradford are bigger than Swindon. Barnsley are bigger than Bradford.... I don't think you realise how small Crewe are. Their biggest post war crowd was 9k. Crewe is a town of 67k and on the doorstep of Stoke.
