We recently got our block paving done in the front garden.

My car doesn't get driven a huge deal and I've noticed when I took it off the driveway this morning the block paving seems to sunk a bit where the front of the car normally is (in particular where the front wheels are).

Is this something we can contact the people that did the work about and get them to sort it, or is this a common problem and something we need to sort ourselves?

I observed them over the days when they were doing the work and I think they've everything they were supposed to and they've dug down about 2 inches I think, levelled/put down hardcore/put down sharp sand/laid block paving down/levelled again.

It looked OK when it was finished and I've only noticed this problem today - the few times I've driven the car away before it seemed OK then too. The only thing I can think of is that we have had quite a lot of rain here recently?

Was going to say, 2" is nothing. I block paved my drive a few years ago and went about 8-10" down.

It shouldnt be sinking so i would get in touch with the company that did it and see what they say.

Actually it may have been more than that.

What's the minimum depth for electric/gas pipes? Because they dug deep enough to expose them, so maybe it was more like 200mm than 2 inches which according to Google is just under 8 inches.

As you may have gathered I'm a bit shit with converting measurements

Ours has sunk, but that was due to a leaking pipe under the drive for years i think. Had to have it partially dug up as well.

Getting other half to phone them as she has their contact details.

I'm not surprised TBH as the land around here isn't great for building on due to mines from days of old and my neighbour was telling me a house round the corner had to be underpinned because that kept sinking down the hill kinda thing

It may seem a daft question, but did you specifically say you wanted to convert your 'garden' to a drive?

And is it permeable paving?

They are meant to be coming round in a few minutes to sort out... I shall be observing their efforts and will report back...

I was thinking about what Fro said about the leaking water pipe, at the front of our house the porch gutter constantly leaks on to the ground (where the newly paved driveway is), and there seems to be a lack of visible sand between the blocks there and in that area in general.

Could that have been the reason why it has sunk a bit here?

Could be worth mentioning to them, ours took a while to sink though as the pipe got worse after time, dont think our hardcore was done properly either which hasnt helped.

Ours has groves basically where the cars sit, ill try and get a pic at the weekend.

They've been and gone...

I mentioned the leaking guttering to them and to their credit they actually went up and fixed it for us free of charge.

They also removed the blocks in the sunken area, put some sand down, refitted the blocks and used their 'Wacker' over it.

They reckon it have been caused by the leaking guttering, but more likely to be a result of movement under the ground.
