Not really no. Should be on a lighting circuit.

i have a cupboard in my living room with a light in it, so rather than having to chisel out the wall in the kitchen i can do it in the cupboard where its hidden

The light in the cupboard will be on a plug won't it?

Do a quick sketch in paint of the floor plan with where you want the light and where the nearest switch is. Easiest way.

You might be able to take a feed from upstairs too but you'd need to take floorboards up.

More than likely have no neutral at light switch so would have to come from a lighting JB or ceiling rose.

Nothing wrong with taking off the ring main aslong as its fed via a fused spur with 5A fuse fitted.

Why should it be on a lighting circuit?

We have ours above our kitchen window coming in from a small hole going into our old extractor fan circuit (fused) with no problems

if its a sensored light and your mounting it near a socket just drill through the wall use some flex and put it on a plug with a 3amp fuse its wat we do at work

If your sure its a neutral you can yes.

Make sure its not just a single twin and earth cable either with one red core and one black core or one brown core and a blue core.

If you just have one twin and earth both cores will be live, one perm one switched back to the light.

Pics would help.

Tbh mark, by the sounds of it this isn't a job you should take on by yourself. Also, sounds like your gonna need to chase the wall out for new wiring.

Buy a solar powered outside light.

Something like that.

LED FTW.

Its the only choice unless he wants an untidy job with trunking down the wall as he's not wanting to chase and re-plaster.

Most likely the red is always live, and the black is the switched live. There is no neutral. You would still need to find a neutral somewhere.

See what i mean?
