Just found out my neighbour has been stealing my internet connection.I used the pre set password on my router so just had to change it for something more secure. she's gonna regret it in the morning when she can't get on now

How did you know she was using your Internetz?

Will you accept "payment-in-kind" from her, from now on?

I think you should negotiate for this and let her use it

Negotiate = blackmail

Or just left her on there for another day but do some packet sniffing/MITM and get all her passwords etc

The password on your router wont stop people using your WIFI, you need to set a WEP or better still a WPA security key.

WEP isn't secure...

Use WPA.

We dont have WEP/WPA..... someone explain the difference.

We have put access on the router for certain mac addresses only... i.e PS3... laptop etc etc.

Surely that means only we can use ours.

yes, but what I would do is sit near your access point, use kismet to find your access point and see the assiocated machines with it with their mac addresses. I'd then use standard tools on my laptop to change my mac address to the mac address of your laptop/PS3, then i would run DHCP, get an addres and enjoy some yummy free internet.

Could have let her connect, gone through her Pictures folder then booted her off once all good pictures had been acquired

And anything more would be highly illegal Will

Just get WPA encryption set up and hide the point (so you have to remember the name correctly), then with Mac address filtering unless someone really wants access to your network for some reason you'll pretty much be fine.

you can still find the SSID without it being broadcasted.

True, but why would someone truely go to all that hassle to get onto your network tbh (unless its a neighbour who's to cheap to get their own).

to sniff your credit card details / passwords )

Because to some (bad) people knowing your internet banking details outweighs the hassle of getting onto your network!

Use WPA

Because once they are on your network, they can start using your connection as a source of attacks, they can do man in the middle SSLsniff sessions and fake certificates, from there on then they can start raping your paypal passwords, internet banking and so forth. They may want to start scanning your Windows PC for any patches you havent installed, get access to it, take off any personal data you might have, bank statements, personal letters, private photos, the list goes on!

Security through obsecurity is not the way forward.

WPA, MAC filtering, hide SSID and regular checking of logs.

Or RADIUS

Cloning the mac address of a machine wont over-come the fact that the data-packets are being encyrpted.

Yes, however for most home users, unless they have a powerful wireless device or in a very built up area, this isn't particularly something to worry about. It is far easier to go for someone with WEP encryption with a broadcasted SSID than someone with WPA, Hidden SSID and MAC Filtering.

Most security systems can be broken, however there is a point where you are doing what you need to do as a home user.

obviously!

Also please remember to use WPA2, WPA is crackable but it needs to be done through bruteforce, whereas WEP used a very poor implementation of its encryption thus its easy to get the WEP key after a few thousand packets.

Directional antennas and powerful wireless adapters like the ones I had in my possesion for a while, I dont need to be near your gaff to play around with it. Yes its easier to go for the ones with WEP but the ones with more security might be hidng something more worthwhile getting to

Home user security is as important as business security in this day and age of Internet banking and so forth. Think of the people who get their paypal SMASHED and end up with 0 in their bank account and savings cause they clicked on some images Nismo posted up.

Very true, Just saying there is a sensible level of protection and anonymity that you can give yourself on a home network, which would discourage brute force attacks and packet sniffing.

Also to take into consideration, people are just as likely to download spyware/keyloggers etc as they are to have their network compromised.
