I want to have a mess about with a few sound programs but i'm getting bogged down with stuff I don't understand, any ideas what i'd need to get going, just basic really. Thinking of using Logic as I know a few people who use it at a more advanced level but say its not that hard to use.

As little as possible to start with, been told to go for a external usb audio interface, and for a cheap version m-audio arent bad. Just something to get me started, have a muck about and see how it goes. Had a look and they are about £60 which is about right, don't mind paying that.

it's one of those things I've always been on the verge of doing but never got around to it.

I have a Asus Xonar kicking around.
BRAND new in a box still. I tried it in my PCI express port and I had too much in my case to fit it in

Im glad you've reminded me. Im gonna stick it on ebay for £100 + P&P, your welcome to it for £90 all in if interested.

very impressive sound cards. You wont find a bad review

You can pick up and older soundblaster audigy with the front ports for less than £50.

Has loads of inputs on the front panel then, they come with a lot of software as well

What speakers do you have?
If you have decent speakers, i.e 5.1 then you will hear a benefit, if its cheap £20 stereo speakers, then no

I use the onboard sound on my asus p5k through digital coax to my 5.1 amp, there would be absolutely not difference between that and a sound card since the amp is decoding it.
