That is what I'm assuming has happened, the X16XEL i bought has the C16XE inlet and AFM don't know what the C16XE ECU looks like but this one is fucking huge and silver, Plastic cover on the rocker cover says ecotec

Ignore the plastic cover, thats so easily interchangable that its not worth reading it. I have 3 of them, all saying different things

Later blocks are meant to be better than earlier ones anyway

Edit: because there were a few problems with some of the C16XE ones when they were first released IIRC.

I think you've got the best of both worlds there mate

ahh I didn't read gregg's post - yea, it seems that we agree, that is what has probably happened.

As he says, the heads and bottom ends are interchangable.

It could be a X16XEL bottom end with the C16XE top but i paid £250 for a C16XE as i have said, sorry if im being repetitive but im pretty pissed off, i didn't pay good money for a mongrel engine

You have a better engine anyway.

As far as I'm aware, the bottom ends are identical, so by you having a later bottom end, it 'should' be in better condition than the original C16XE bolck.

So your saying, the x16xel bottom end with the c16xe head is a good combo? but will this still have the same power as a standard c16xe engine or will it be lacking some? not that the power matters all that much but i wanted a c16xe.

Yes, the power will be the same.

Early C16XE engine suffered from undersized pistons and many had to be recalled by vauxhall. The parts that caused the BHP differences were the head and most importantly the inlet.

true

All the heads are interchangable so the inlet will still go on. I think the C16XE head had slightly larger ports, but there's only 3BHP difference between a C16 and X16 including the emissions rubbish

Vauxhall has tweaked the cylinder head design several times over the past 13 years. The early C16XE head (casting number: 90472726) is a cracker as it uses much larger ports, whereas the later X14XE and X16XE use smaller and different shaped ports that peg the power back. The very latest head casting (number: 90400187) uses triangular inlet ports, which work a lot better, gaining up to 12bp.

Not sure where the casting mark is though sorry
