Last night I was driving along the motorway , at around 70 changing from 3rd gear to 4th.

At this point the turbo was spooling as normal then the dump valve went off and then a large bang. Straight after this the car started to missfire and the engine management light was flashing.

Put it into the garage this morning thinking a coilpack was probably gone , but it turns out the diagnostic showed no compression in cylinder 4.

Gutted , sounds expensive. The car is a 51 plate Ibiza Cupra with 50k on the clocks

Any one on here know their stuff about the 1.8 20v T VAG engine ?

Thanks
Gregor

Get the head whipped off & see what your talking about, could just be a gasket......sounds bad if there was a bang though

iirc Fro's got bits of VW agu spare

Taking the head off one of these engines sounds and looks like a total pig though. Not sure if I should pay the garage to do it or not

It's well known that atmospheric dump valves cause detonation on these engines.

FREAKY!

My Cupra has the exact same problem at the moment!

Was coming home monday, gave it some beans and it sort of machine gun popped out the exhaust.....drove it abit slower home, came into my road and gave it some beans, just as it comes onto the boost, more popping and engine managment light starts flashing!

Left it till today, had it on the VAG COM today, came up with cylinder 3 miss fire and multiple miss fire.

Fingers crossed its just the coilpack, i have ordered coilpack, leads and plugs.....

After it happened I drove the car a good 10-15 miles , so had the belt tensioner slipped surely the car would have just given up on me there and then ?

Fair do's but would it not be the same principle ?

On the basis that I have stripped and rebuilt an x16xe to a working state , would I be able to tackle the cupra ? (at a VERY last resort) i.e massive repair bill
