looks like the bmw i was going to get is going too cost me alot of dollar to get it on the road again so i've been looking around for something reliable, preferably under £1500, sporty, but no less that 30mpg. never really looked at them before but i really like the seat ibiza's.really like the front end and interior of the mk3 but i can get a better mk2 for my sort of money.can anyone give me any advice? engine options? common problems? found a really nice 2.0 8v gti, sooo tempting.

thanks!!

p.s. i know that this is corsasport.co.uk

I've had 3 of them myself

The mk2 ibiza is basically a mk4 polo, with abit of mk3 golf thrown in.

Most commnly found as a 1.4, either an AEX, ABD or APQ engine. GTI ones will see you a 2.0 be it 8v or 16v.

Engines are spot on VAG ones that will take abuse and never let you down. They are known to have faulty coil packs, but thats about it. The shell itself is good but will rust on the rear arches (as does the mk4 polo) so check that when buying. Suspension wise, the base modles will be comfortable....like a boat. GTI modles will be better but still seem abit tetchy until you space out the rear track with some wheel spacers. The mk4 polo beam is 30mm narrower than the front

I went for the 2.0 8v for a few reasons. Cheap to run, cheap to insure, cheap and easy to fix (such a simple engine), 0-60mph is still 8 seconds, tops out at 130mph ish, drives like a dream (130lb torque) and parts are really easy to get.

When i have more money i'll get another bright green one but a 16v
Easy to tune this engine, you can get 190bhp without throttle bodies

Forgot to mention up to 1996 was the 'pre-facelift' and from 1996 to 2000 was the facelift.

You want a facelift, much nicer

thats brilliant mate.thanks for the help! found one the same colour as yours, 1997, full seat service history, 80k, for £1000.not far from me either.that sound like a good price? if i get one i'm afraid i will be pestering u with loads of questions as i prefer to work on my car myself.lol.where did you get your spacers from? also,i read in your project thread that your using a "pb" camshaft.whats that all about?wont be doing much tuning with mine.love torquey engines so sounds perfect! hows the fuel economy?sorry for all the questions!cheers!

Best has been 42mpg
Worst has been 27mpg

Depends how you drive really

The PB engine was used in the mk2 golf GTI. Its very similar to the AGG engine (2.0 8v) but it was a 1.8. Saying that the PB was the same power as the AGG all because back then they didnt mind about emissions and just wanted power

Spacers are easy to get hold of. Ebay is where mine came from.

Again, most are the 1.4

Rather economical tbh. No tuning potential at all.

1.8 is the biggest engine, but that has 20 valves & 160bhp

thanks mate! really getting into the idea now, really like the look of them and the reliability.just seem like good, under rated cars. i really like the cupra's but bit out of my price range and insurance bracket but considering getting a 1.4 for now to give me a chance to save up for one.

Mine was £1,000

You can get 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.0 16v

I started with a 1.4 8v

Can pick these up very cheap now for around £1500ish or if you'd rather find a minter than you can expect to pay a bit more .Like Superlite said, very good engines and apparently not even broken in till 100k .Parts are still readily available and can be interchanged with various golfs and polo's.

Here's mine as it looks now...its the 1.8 16v GTi btw
