reet have 4GB in my machine, visual inspection shows 4 x 1 GB sticks, BIOS is happy and reports 4GB. 
 
For some reason vista is only showing 3GB??

If you are running 32-bit thats all it will be able to see. TO see the full 4GB amount you will need to install either 64-bit or Win2K3

A reason why vista wont be around for too long, and why most people will be using x64 operating systems.

Care to explain why Vista won't be around long. Vista can be a x64 OS if you choose to install that version. In 5 years time it will probably have replaced XP on a majority of systems and have a 50%+ Market share as there is no viable alternative

imo, Vista is just the go-between operating system between XP and the next windows release (currently code named Vienna/seven). 
As your limited to useable ram in x86 of 4gb (including GPU ram I understand), your pretty much forced to use x64 if you have a decent system.  
 
There was also rumors about the OS being released in 2010, seems strange, but they done the same with Windows ME.
