Just took my car in for a diagnostic to find out why she's running 'lumpy' and causing the emission readings to fluctuate quite erratically. Lambda 'seems' fine but only on visual inspection.
What's stange is that she's overfuelling but the ECU is not reporting back any fault code bar Code 24 'No speed' but the car was stationary
Just obtained the readings from the MOT Tester and they are as follows:
Fast idle test FAIL
Engine Speed [RPM]
2750/3250 2937 NO CHECK
CO
<=0.30 0.33 FAIL
HC
<=00200 01427 FAIL
LAMBDA
0.97/1.03 -.-- FAIL
Second Fast Idle Test FAIL
Engine Speed [RPM]
2750/3250 ---- NO CHECK
CO
<=0.30 0.29 FAIL
HC
<=00200 01069 FAIL
LAMBDA
0.97/1.03 -.-- FAIL
Natural Idle Test PASS
0800/1060 ---- NO CHECK
CO
<=0.50 0.03 PASS

Looks like I'm in for an expensive couple of weeks and no car since I'm skint 'til next week
Anyone shed any light on the readings? The HC figures are quite shocking and the fact the lambda is going off the scale isn't the best news either. I'm going to change the plugs later today and then try my old 1.4 ECU to see if that makes any difference....might be able to pinpoint the problem though looking like a trial and error job.....sigh.

CTS, ICV, seal exhaust up. New lambda, it maybe on the way out.
Give it a good tanking on the way to the MOT centre to make sure it's warmed up.

C16SE. CTS (Coolant Temp Sensor?). First time it's been mentioned and something else to throw into the cooking pot of trial and error. Whereabouts is it and how cheap to replace if necessary?

It's located on the thermostat housing on the 16 valves. Unsure where it would be on that though.

Just changed the plugs and no better. Taking her in for another diagnostic on Saturday just to double check that nothing has been missed. £20 for lambda sensor on Ebay so will start there methinks, depending of course whether or not the diagnostics reveal anything this time round.

Yeah. When I changed the C14SE for the C16SE, I kept the exhaust manifold from the 1.4 and fitted it to the 1.6 so the exhaust hasn't been touched.

think you can get a lamba cheaper than that from a local factors, you have to snip and connect the wire though as theyre universal.. i think i got a icv and lamba probe from my local factors for about 26 quid

I had this on my 1.2 16v and it was the coolant temp sensor.

Thanks for the advice lads, didn't get her in today afterwards but she's booked in for Monday so hopefully will be able to establish the cause.
ICV, CTS, Lambda, Cat are firm 'faves' atm but fingers crossed it's something simple. One of the lads in work reckons the MAF sensors very rarely go so hopefully it isn't that either. Might get a new cat to be on the safe side because I don't know how old the current one is...although it does look in very good condition externally.
Mrs is about to have a baby (due in 2 weeks) so I need to be on the road....cars are a pain in the arse sometimes Will post back with any findings, may help someone else in the future.

It appears that the second cylinder is not firing right for some reason that's not showing on the diagnostic which kind of bewilders me.....shouldn't the ECU report any such fault as a fault code? My Engine Management light never comes on at all yet she's running like shit
I've looked into prices for a new injector for that cylinder (£67 + VAT) from Vauxhall but wondered if there is any difference between the injectors they used in the 1.4 and 1.6? If for example, you used a 1.4 injector in a 1.6 engine, would that make any difference? Someone is bound to know.
Failing that, I was thinking of turning my attention to the ECU itself since it does seem suspicious to me that no faults are being reported back....any thoughts?

i wouldnt advise using 1.4 injectors as there too small. also dont replace your cat as your co is ok. have you replaced the leads recently?

Not changed the leads but they don't appear to be leaking. If the spray from the 1.4 injector isn't sufficient to fire the cylinder then that could be where my problem is.
Had a lot of trouble with the install on the second cylinder and MAY have used an injector from the C14SE on her....d'oh.

The injectors on the C14SE and C16SE are the same....so that can't be it. I've just taken them off to be sent for reconditioning. Works out cheaper to do all 4 than to buy a new one.

Got my answer: reconditioned and they reported a problem with one of them but should be fine now. Reinstalling them tomorrow and hopefully that'll be the resolution
