On the main computer, where the printer is installed.

Right click on the printer (start --> control panel --> printers & faxes) and click on the sharing tab

Click on the radio button next to share this printer

name your printer something like "colour" or whatever you please (in the share box)

Then on your laptop go to start --> run --> \\NAMEOFMAINCOMPUTER\PRINTERNAME

e.g.

\\costalcorsapc-01\colourprinter

I could do with doing this, do you not have to install drivers or anything on the other comp first or do those commands do it all for you?

How far through Dans post did you get?

You can also find the main computer from the laptop by going to My Network Places - View workgroup computers, if its not in there do an up to Microsoft Windows Network and choose the Workgroup that it is in.

If that still doesn't work disable any firewalls on the main computer.

While sitting at the main PC is there a hand under the printer in Settings - Printers and Faxes?

Another option is to buy a print server. Then the main computer wouldn't have to be turned on when you want to print

Means your printer is shared, now

so if you go on the laptop while connected to the network and type in the main computer name followed by the printers share name you should be able to find it.

or find it from my network places.

have you got file and printer sharing as an exception on your windows firewall also?
