My car is lowered now just just a silly question really, are say -40mm lowering springs just 40mm shorter than the originals? so say the measure from the top coil to the bottom coil would be 40mm less?

Nope. It's the ride height that should be 40mm less.

It depends on the spring rate and car to be fitted on for the height.
