i know its obvious but make sure you are turning it the right way, (we've all done it trying to undo something then realise you are tightening it!).If all else fails then the screwdriver should do it with a little help from a hammer.

On the 2.0 oil filter studs you can fit an 8mm allen key into the hole in it - if all else fails you could cut the filter up and try that. I'm sure all the studs are going to be pretty much the same. Then just get a new filter stud - they cost about £4...

don't use the chain thing to get one off as they suck.
I had a problem with mine when I had the corsa I stabbed it with a screwdriver in the end

Never - repeat NEVER deliberately pierce the filter unless absolutely necessary - this will render it too slippery to grip, and weaken the structure of the filter in the event of the screwdriver trick being unsuccessfull.

Try a pair of swan necks on it (large adjustable pliers), they are usually infallible, or a Snap-on filter strap. There are two types, the metal band type; and the metal drive with thick webbing strap type.

If the manufactures cup style of remover does not work, one of the above three will be succesful.

Good luck.

try and warm it a bit first, might help.

when ever i struggle to get one off i just use some big pliers/grips... although don't use them when you put a new one on
