Layup today Had a slight disaster where the first pot of gel coat went off in about 4 mins, I may have put a tiny bit too much hardener in there but I also think the fact that it was pushing 30 degrees down in the workshop didn't help matters. This caused a problem where after I put the carbon down onto the gelcoat I found a lump which may have fucked up the cosmetic weave I was aiming for in a little point on the roof. But never mind...

So here it is. One de-flashed and polished tool:

Some gel coat before I put it on:

Gelcoat on tool:

Pin prick release film and breather fabric:

Breather fabric on the back of the tool:

Some 200gsm 2x2 twill carbon:

Got all the resin in small quantities ready to mix while I was laminating:

Wetting out the edges:

Lay on the release film:

Vac bagged it:

Aim for 28 inches of mercury vac (only managed 25, couldn't get all the leaks):

Lunch:

I didn't vacuum bag it correctly so what I think has happened is all the resin ended up in the white breather material. I think that this happened because I used the pin-prick release film which lets quite a lot of resin through, in hindsight I should have used some different stuff called peel ply which is like a fabric that absorbs excess resin, but far less than the arrangement I went with. Oops, live and learn hey...

I'm not too keen on doing that as I couldn't guarantee the engineering and safety of them.
