Quality of installation is just as important as the brand of alarm.

Thatcham Cat 1 is only good if it's a current certificate (some older alarms dont pass on the current level of test), and only worthwhile if it affects your insurance premium.

Some alarms might not get Cat 1 status purely because they include toys such as remotestart, but they can still provide all the security offered by others.

Just because one person has said so?

Get the yellow pages and look for VSIB approved alarm fitters in your area and find out what they charge and what alarms they recommend, etc.

Some companies like GAP offer a nationwide service.

iirc current a cat 1 alarm will take your insurance down by about 10%
just make sure you get something that wont go off when it shouldnt coz you'll end up just turning it off all the time and get something with motion sensors incase some chav trys bending down the top of your door like they did with mine, the alarm only when off when hed got his arm in unlocked the door and opend it. but then i dont have a cat 1

I was thinking about getting an alarm before i start doing anything serious to my car but ive not even got central locking let alone remote central locking. would this increase what i would have to pay or would they install it as part of the fitting fee (i doubt it)

I've been told that they always overcharge for the actual locking kit though so would it be worth buying it seperate from somewhere like HERE and getting whoever installs the alarm to do that when they install the alarm (i realise they will still charge more for the fitting though) how much do you think it would cost to get an alarm fitted with remote central locking?
