Bought it as a present for someone but can't get it to install. Says something about 'excess physical dump'???

Anyone any ideas how to get the damn thing to run?

Its not a shitty old computer either, seems a decent spec (no idea of specifics!).

Cheers

Depends how 'old' is 'old'. HL2 needs a pretty decent spec machine really...

Go to Start > Run...
Type: dxdiag (and click ok)

Once it's analysed your machine, post the operating system/processor/memory/directx version from the System tab, and the device name/total memory from the Display tab... (will give the key specs of your machine)

Cheers. How do I find out what sort of graphics card it is?

I suspect this to be the problem. I guess it'll have to go back

do dxdiag like tim told you then goto the display tab, will tell u there

also to quickly check look on the back of the case, is the vga port near the ps2 or usb ports, and not on a seperate slot like the ones with the blanking plates over

hmm, its a bit hit and miss, it should do, im not sure if that card supports transform and lighting!

I would have said it should run it, it wont be 8xagp though thats just the max the port is compatible with

have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling?

also try stopping some of the programs running in the task bar bottom right

Will have to go round and have a proper look at it. Problem is that I have no idea about computers and neither does the person who I bought it for!

Cheers for the help.

It does support T&L, will run halflife 2 to acceptable level. Wont run the new dx code path though, need a 6000 series card for that.
