My car is a pain in the arse. I have a distant memory of what it used to be like when it ran nicely.

Several problems (not to mention the many things like fuel guage doesn't work, many bulbs like in the centre console are gone etc etc). Basically if I pull away in say 1st or 2nd gear, happens sometimes but not all, and booting it and pulling away really slowly...

Basically the car doesn't respond at all at first... Gets to about 2k rpm and then goes 'Chug chuga chug chug' as if it's about to cut out... but then passes that a sec later and then accelerates fine (with it pulling better at 3.5k - 4k rpm), but then really stops pulling at all after about 5100 rpm.

So basically if I go to race someone off the lights, my car won't even get going for a while (even in 1st) and for a couple of secs will kangeroo / chug when its on the move, as it passes about 2k rpm (big flat spot?).

Basically by keeping the revs over 2k at all times (which generally driving about is fine), it doesn't happen. However pulling out of junctions, across roundabouts and similar things - it has a tendancy of nearly cutting out.

I have no idea at all what is causing this?

I wouldn't of thought it'd be 'lack of air' - as the car is moving. Unlike booting it straight away off the lights and suffocating it (no air moving in) - we're talking about moving, with a steady air flow going through - plus it only happens as you pass 2k rpm, not before, not after.

Also, I remember my car pulling a lot better after 5k in the past, when I had it rolling roaded it made peak power at 5600 rpm - but pulled to the limiter pretty quick. Now as soon as it passes about 5200 rpm it's a waste of time, I might as well change gear as you can feel the power drop off.

I went out in Adi-Sri's corsa the other day 1.4 16v and his car pulled so much harder after 5k! all the way to 6500 rpm in no time at all. only 9 bhp difference.

Anyone got any idea's what either of these may be? (it's a 1.2 16v Sxi if you didn't know)

I thought possibly Air flow meter? but not sure. Idle Control Valve seems fine and lifting off the gas anywhere other than 2k does not cause problems.

oly 9bhp but the 1.4 will be better than a 1.2 IMO, sounds like a tricky one.....

Mine did the same as this. Turned out to be a faulty Air Mass Meter. Apparently this is a common problem so try that ??

Air mass meter
Crank position sensor
Coolant temp. sensor
Fuel pump/fuel pump relay
Dizzy could be fecked
Knackered spark plugs
Broke high tension leads

The list goes on....

Get you ass down to a mechanic and get some diagnostics done on it - or do the paperclip test if you can...

Richie it's funny you should say about the MPG... My car drinks petrol fucking fast!

40 litres only gets me 250ish miles...

I thought it should be about 300-400 miles on 40 litres?

You could pay for the diagnostics, or you could just drive around in a knackered car, and possibly make the problem worse....

I refuse to pay £76 when everywhere else in the country pays £35 or less for the same service.

Go somehwere cheaper then. Seems stupid to leave it when a car costs thousands to buy and most of the time hundreds to repair...
