Any idea why my rear drum brakes are locking up when i brake heavily at low speed? I recently changed the front disks and pads and topped the brake fluid up

bed the fronts in & re-bleed them.

if there is air in the front of the system, the rears will over-compensate so lock up. Also the auto-adjuster in the rears might need resetting.

could also be a bit of a sticky bias valve.

Also, have you lowered the car at all?

The fronts are bedded in and there is no way there should be air the system. How do i get to the adjuster at the rear? Also it is not lowered

why's that. If they needed replacing, this would be becuase they don't lock or brake at all. My hand brake works fine and the brakes just lock up when i apply quite abit of pressure on the pedal.

Would it be becuase there is too much fluid in the system?

mine did it
my mates did it
the ones with the inline valves are best
the ones " like my old one" which had a bias valve are crap

onyl other thing i could suggest is rest the auto adjuster so the shoes anrt as close to the drum

edit- and replace the retackting "sp" springs these can wear in time thus the rear braking power increases

It sounds like the Bias valve is jammed and the car thinks that there alot of weight in the back when theres not hence more brake pressure to the rear

could be as when i replaced the front brakes the pdeal went straight to the floor due to sticking pads, so the rear shoes lay have over componsated.

What you think

when the rear brakes need replacing the tend to lock up first, seen it before, check the bias spring if you like, its on the rear beam on the passenger side, if the cars not lowered tho cant see that being a problem

no, they get grabby when worn hence they are locking up, so they will hold with handbrake

Soted the problem. I had put too much Brake fulid in the container, so i soaked some up and it doesn't lock now, even at high speed.

1.2 Models rely on pressure for regualtion and 1.4-1.6 models rely on load pressure for regualting.
