when the throtel is closed the turbo trying to push air into pipework that is already full of compressed air. this causes the air inside the compressor housing to skip over the top of the blades inside the housing and makes chatter.
Chatter dose not come from the wastegate!

But can it b loud enough to b heard on a turbo diesel

no its not i av just told u wot chatter is.

chatter is the noise that is made when the throtel is closed and the turbo is pushin 2 much air into the pipe work. this couses pressure to build up n a flow of air is reversed over the compresser impeller untill pressuer is equlised. this happes about 5 times a second or so. this can b hear from the air fillter as a sound. tsch-tsch-sch-sch (rattle snake ish) sound. nothin 2 do with the wastegate.
plz note this is on a turbo car with out a dump valve

Ps sory about spellin. i cant spell

is the sound you describe not the wastegate releasing the excess boost?

GSi_16v, the chatter you mean is from a wastegate, you have 2 valve's on a turbo system, one is the dump valve(bov) this releases the Forced Induction Air to stop it possibly damaging the turbo when you come off throttle, and the other side is the wastegate you will not normally hear anything on a standard car but when people upgrade turbo's they will have a larger external wastegate to avoid overboost, a wastegate is on the exhaust side of the turbo system, it releases the hot air to stop it from spooling up the turbo, normally if your car is set to 9psi and ure on full boost the wastegate will open enough to stop it boosting over 9psi, an uprated external wastegate will generally release all exhaust pressure when you come off throttle causing the chatter.

To put it as simply as possible, this phenomenon is caused when the pressure ratio across the compressor side of the turbo becomes large enough to cause a flow reversal aross the compressor wheel. In effect the pressure in the intake manifold downstream of the turbo becomes high enough for air to flow backwards through the turbo for a split second. This has the effect of lowering the pressure in the manifold, and hence causing the flow reversal to stop. Of course as soon as this occurs the pressure downstream of the compressor can recover again and the whole process is repeated. This will happen at a fairly low frequency - say a couple of hertz and the pressure waves present in the inlet tract as a result will be audible.

there u go

so to put it even simpeler Chatter is the air reverberating off the turbo blades when the throttle is closed.

Think about what happens when you lift off:

The turbo isn't being asked to provide boost, so there is no need for the wastegate to open (which it only does when max boost is reached). Therefore it would not be opening and closing.

Even so, the wastegate is a metal flap against the metal casting of the turbo's exhaust housing. If it were to fluctuate, it would not produce the sound we know as chatter, more a metallic clattering sound.

The only sound you'll ever hear from the wastegate is external ones venting to atmosphere

corect me if i am wrong but i fink u will find i am right

if you want a noisy TD Corsa relocate the airfilter and you will hear it whistle all the qway through the rev range, if you mean the chatter that rally cars make this is the antilag system when they are slowing down. TD's do not have wastegates as they do not have a throttle

am not talkin about rally cars how do u relocate the airfillter?

if a TD dose not have a wate gate then how is exess pressure relised when it reaches max boost
also how can any car not have a throttle

the exsess pressure goes into the engine, there is no throttle

Just have a pipe with the filter bolted straight onto the turbo

well i aint gotta clue what chatter you are 'talking' about, but it certainly IS the wastegate that provides the renowned chatter.
