When I first start car (corsa) it chucks out a fair bit of smoke and really stinks of burning oil. this happens whether the engine is cold or hot, it alwys does it. it is also using a lot of oil. i popped it down garage last week and they said it was most likely valve stem seals or something.. The oil pressure is fine and as it should be. Does this sound about right? Can it be done DIY? If not how mucho should i be looking to pay?

Thanks for any help / pointers

probably right about the valve stem oil seals, could be piston rings as well. as far as a diy job its really depends on how handy u are with a spanner.

quite a common thing on x16xe. might as well do the piston rings as well if it is the seals. wots the mileage?

yep, the C16XE and X16XE have got teribble oil consumtion problems!!!!!

my gsi burns shite loads of oil per month!!
very expensive job to repair, from £500 to £1500 better of doing a engine conversion if you can afford it!

talk to "greasemonkey" of here, hes had his whole engine rebuilt coz of it!

yep that is true, i just had mine re-built, well pleased with it though, gave me a change to have bigger pistons, porting and polishing and a chance to have every thing lightened and balanced, runs sweet, not burnt a drop of oil and thats with me revving it up to 7500RPM, i say do it, my C16XE has C20XE power, the 2litre will still beat me though top end and cos its got masses or tourqe but it wont be far off, re-building is allot less hassle than a conversion, ya wil end up with an engine with 0 miles on it rather than a 2litre will 80'000 on and no garentee this one wont smoke

the reason for this is because you miss your oil changes, or you push for your engine when it's cold, or you use crappy oil
Mine with 78K, is constantly abused, pushing till 7300 rpm, and the oil consuption is almost 0 in 3,5K.
But I use one of the best oil around:
Bardahl XTR racing

Conclusion:
Oil changes are the cheapest maintenace you can do
