VAUXHALL LAUNCHES VXR
New name for high-performance models
Vauxhall will unveil its new range-topping performance brand at the British motor show
next May. According to highly placed sources, the cars will be dubbed VXR and will be mostly based on the high-performance Opel OPC range.

Spearheading the VXR models will be a 240bhp version of the new three-door Astra powered by a Lotus-developed version of the 2-litre turbo unit used in the VX220 roadster.

Although the Astra VXR will be front-drive, engineers reckon the new 'IDS Plus' chassis
system (which includes electronically controlled dampers) is capable of dealing with the power.

Insiders say the production version of the three-door has barely changed from the concept (GTC), though the rear roofline has been lifted.

Vauxhall is also looking at a 'cheaper' VXR-branded 1.8-litre Corsa in an attempt to break back into the junior hot hatch market currently dominated by Citroen and MG Rover. This model could also be unveiled at Birmingham. Plans for a turbocharged engine during the lifetime of the current car have been dropped, but the next-generation Corsa will get a turbo unit. Another possible for the VXR launch is a 'sprint' version of the VX220
roadster.

Vauxhall is also considering bringing the new twin-turbo 1.9-litre turbodiesel Vectra OPC
to the UK. Recently unveiled at the Essen motor show, it develops 207bhp and a monster 295 lb ft of torque from just 1300 from to 3500rpm.

But Vauxhall has shelved plans for the supercharged Vectra. The new strategy calls instead for a turbocharged V6 Vectra powered by the new GM 'Global' engine that's fitted to the new Alfa GT coupe. The Vectra VXR isn't expected for another 18 months at least, coinciding with a probable facelift of the whole range.
