Last night driving home and my engine management light came on , the car spluttered then stalled. i restarted the engine and it was OK again for about ten minutes then done it again.

this morning i noticed my speedo has stopped working and the odometer has also stopped. before i go ripping the dash apart can anyone tell me if it is electronic or cable controlled?

I have no idea if these are related because the intermitant EML and stalling has continued today since speedo died.

Any advice/suggestions welcome

Cheers

I agree, check the fuses first.

My guess is that your speedometer is cable controlled and i think that your cable has snaped.Replacing the cable solves the problem.I also think that this is a common problem on corsas, correct me if i'm wrong.

A broken speedo cable shouldn't affect the running of the engine, it shouldn't cause the engine management light to come on.
I once had the exact same symptoms in my '98 Sport, as Dan says, it turned out to be a blown 20 amp fuse.

SPEED SENSOR!

I had this problem a few weeks back. Buy yourself a speedo head as the sensor is in there and cant be repaired. Don't go to Vauxhall. Cost me £400!

Mine cut out as I slowed down / rolled into neutral

£400 Thats sounds way over the top just for the sender unit.
Check your fuse box for fuse number 18 before you do anything else, rule this out first.

All the mileage clocks (odometers) in the Corsa B are analogue, regardless of wether or not the speedo is cable or electronically fed.

cheers for the replies so far, just swapped the fuse (#18) out even though it looked OK but still nothing, just waiting for my mate to come round and check the cable at the g/b for me. (i'm not lazy but recovering from broken legs & and an arm so i cant go crawling about the car)

Tell me about it. My dad kept telling me to send it to Vauxhall (he paid half)

Could have had a dianostic for £60 and speed sensor / head for a tenner from the scrappy

Was that £400 just for the sensor? I thought the the ones for the GTE digital dash were expensive at £80

I had my sxi (c) in 5 times under warranty for asimilar fault. was a loose speedo cable and then they replaced the body control module (whatever that does) and its been fine since.

you would have thought so wouldn't you

If there is no speed signal going to the ECU it does show a fault and will cut out randomly generally when slowing to a junction or round-about, pain in the arse when it happens too!
