right 2 questions here. jus had the car in for a head gasket change, when the mechanic had the head off, he said there was loadsa carbon in there, he said this was unusual as he has worked on cars with 90K on them and theyve been spotless! my car is a 96P with 36700miles on the clock. He either said it was down to my drilled air box, or my car hasnt really done THAT many mailes (36k) what can i do to check this? or could it be my drilled air box?

2nd question:

before my head gasket went, i called the AA on the 8-12-03 because i had a flat battery. they came round and charged it a bit and managed to get it started. then he did a crank test and it failed v badly! but we got the car started, he told me to let it run for bout 1/2 hour and it should b ok. so i did, thne i got back in hte car 2 drive 2 college, went 2 turn the radio on and it wont power up! so i checked hte fuses, but it cant b blown as it uses the same fuse as the electric mirrors/courtesy light/glovebox light. i think he may of blown the actual head unit (standard vaux cd player) do i have a claim?

Sounds like your car needs a good thrashing to clear out the carbon deposits, dont listen to the mechanic the cars he worked on could have been decoked previously, i had the head of my 98'000 mile C16XE engine and its well coked up dont worry matey its the norm, get some 10K boost and run some injector cleaner

wirth the mileage you say it has, was it bought of an old women or something? if they never gave it any welly at all, then there will be carbon buildups, plus check the rear backbox for signs of corrosion, cos if they never did thrash it, the condensation would usually collect there & rust it from the inside out

decats not really worth it IMO, just makes a louder noise & draws more attention off the cops, plus if you get pulled for a random emissions test... your fuked!

I'd say get the backbox & see whats left, if ya can see if ya mate will let u have the headunit a bit cheaper, or let you pay it off a bit now & a bit later, but you will need an adaptor cable (audioleads thingy from halfords), and probs also a cage

de-cats are worth it IMO i have one, ok its not fitted yet, but will give you 2-3bhp (same if not more than an induction kit! AND ITS CHEAPER THAN ONE), and just keep your old cat for the mot, how many of you have been stopped for a random emission test?

Wont really even give u that much power if theres nothing to let the engine know the cats gone. IN some cases, it can reduce power.

And 2-3bhp, it really really isn't noticable apart from on a RR.
