Anyone got any recommendation for a CCTV system to run on Windows (i.e. ZoneMinder is out  )
Ideally I want to have streaming & masked motion caption capability.
So far not really found any free decent ones and the best paid one is i-Catcher Sentry which is £65 so not cheap.Also need to find a decent VFW codec for it to use.

Why windows based?
A Decent dvr will connect to your network and let you view via a viewer.
PC CCTV is wank IMO. Do the job right.

What do you think a DVR is. Its a mini computer designed to do a single job.
How exactly is it 'wank'?
I'm very impressed with iCatcher stuff.
Where can I find a DVR with approx 400GB of storage capable of capturing full PAL 30fps with full iIOS support.....etc for £60

Slightly off toic but why in this day and age are CCTV cameras still really poor quality? It's no wonder none of the fuckers on Crimewatch ever get caught with the pixelated, grainy footage.
In response to your question I have no idea but would love CCTV on my house, that way I could find out who flattened one of my conifers last week

That's just the software. You've got the machine cost on top, so hardly a comparison.
We've had PC and DVR, and dvr is better.
Just my opinion from my experience.
AH, CCTV is not poor quality anymore. You just get what you pay for.
It's just night that they struggle with really.

Server based systems are the best, it's all about pay for what you get Dvr's are the cheap and tacky solution!.
I'd recommend lots of software but as he's not willing to pay for I-catcher which is like the most cheap and basic software out there then the only thing I can say is try web cam xp, that's a basic home user setup thing.
Other than that check out Milestone.

But as I already have a server on 24h its a very valid comparison for my use case.
Can you expand on why the DVR is better?

its to do with bandwidth and compression
The leaders in the industry are now working on compression that allows you to transmitt hD video quaility over a network without implications on network performance
