How easy is it to tighten a fan belt?
Sorry I'm a total novice with engines!

alternator belt? powersteering belt?
Either one it is, must need adjusting. Find the adjuster bolt. It's usually a 13mm. Then loosen it, pull the alternator/pump so the belt tightens and tighten the adjuster bolt back up.

Check the condition of the belt aswell, as it might need replacing, A couple squirts of wd40 would be a very temp fix, just so you don't look like a fool

From memory I think its the same as my 1.2 8v one with the adjustable alternator bracket.
Whack a new belt on there whilst your at it as they are cheap as chips. As this will cure the problem rather then desguise it
