How can you tell that you need new brake discs?
My cars done 55k with the original discs.

wear, thickness of disk, cracks, vibrations from disks

general lack of working well i'd imagine 
look at thickness/scoring and particularly any lip on the disc.

nah insurance would increase and I ain't keeping the car for much longer.
I phoned round 5 local garages and the cheapest was £140 for discs and pads fitted.

mintex disks wont increase insurance, they are plain disks of very good quality

Get non genuine fit them yourself cost you next to nothing, still work the same and all that.

If he's selling in August, theres no point.
As said above, fit them yourself. It's easy. £140 to fit some discs and pads is a bit dear TBH.

front discs and pads should take no longer than an hour at a garage or if you know what your doing. parts + fitting all in should be no more than 70 using non gen parts IMO

30 quid on trade from halfords was all it cost meprobably and extra 15 quid or something without trade
should only take an hour or so

I have never changed discs and pads and I don't have the tools.
Could be an expensive month, car needs serviced, discs and pads, brake fluid changed and the something is knocking at the front.
Regarding the knocking it happens when I press the brake pedal.

All you've just listed could be done DIY. Buy the tools, and then you've already saved the money back, plus more.
