gonna start gettin the bits in for my engine conversion, and im thinking about the brakes at the mo, gonna have hi-specs or similar up front (300mm) but at the back???? rear discs?? spira groove drums?? or just leave it as it is
also heard rear discs conversion like to lock up on the corsa, true??

help, advise, and opinions welcome

like groved discs, but the grooves are on the inside of the drums...i'll see if i can find a pic.

U can buy grooved drums yes.

WEll, my own experience of my rear discs.

PEdal feel increased. MUCH much better now.
Car definatly stops better
Feels more stable, but at high speed, stamping on the brakes makes the rear end a little twitchy.
NEVER had any problems with lock ups

I even remember when it first got done on corsas everyone saying it had a tendency to roll the car

Oh, plus the fact they look 1000000000x better than drums.

Deffo worth it!

I've heard they just 'Overbrake' the car but if there set up properley they shouldn't.

You wouldn't think that a disc set-up is cheaper to make than a drum one would you..I wonder why company's still make cars with Drums?

The rears are only 15% of the braking anyway.

does not warrent the extra cash though. Andy Hamilton has never put rear discs on.

I wonder why Saxo VTR's came out with rear disc's and Corsa 1600's did not... this has always confused me...

prob the same reason that lots of saxo drivers go round with fogs on all the time - just for looks...

Spot on. If it's looks you're after, by all means, go for rear discs. But if it's stopping power you want, keep the drums and spend the extra on even better front brakes. Fronts do most of the braking anyway, and when you fit better brakes up front, there's even more weight transfer to the front, which means that the rears do even less

Mine used to lock up pretty easy with the drums, not so with discs. Still do it if i try hard like

25% on the corsas.

Vibrio, warrent the extra cash, what, u mean £20 for the rear calipers and a days work fitting them. Electricty doesn't cost much.

And i presume you have driven a corsa without rear discs and a corsa with rear discs?

Funny how everyone who has rear disc conversion agrees it makes the car stop much better, and everyone who hasnt' says its a waste of time

Daimo - not disputing that there might be 'some' improvement with rear discs. But in the post on V6 brakes, you said:

I've got V6 brakes, and as soon as i can safly afford £700 on a set of 300mm brakes/calipers etc, im buying them
Not for a few years yet though "

All I'm saying is that Matt should concentrate on spending as much as is needed to get the fronts right before thinking about doing anything to the rears. And while the pedal feel might be improved when u combine rear discs with V6 brakes, you haven't got 4-pots on like I have; if you did, you'd realise that the pedal feel is already excellent.

Oh yeah, but this isn't about front brakes, this is about rear brakes. And i have driven cars with 4 pots on the front yes so know how they stop

Im just saying, my car works very well now the rear discs are on and everyone who i've spoken to who has them has agreed. Mostly with different brake setups up front too. Even the car Desmond bought and wrecked with the 19"s. That had Brembo front end and rear discs, that stopped on a penny.

Rear discs cost the price of the calipers/discs etc and the price of a nova handbrake cable (£8). A days work, and ur sorted.

And they look a million times better than drums as i said earlier

so £20 is all it costs for rear discs to be put on a corsa

Well, i got my rear discs for nothing. Maybe £20-£30 from a scrappy.
Rear nova handbrake cable = £7-£8

And some tools.

So no, its not expensive at all
