car keeps breaking down seems to be whenever i put the clutch down
engine just cuts out and it won't restart for about 15 mins

Any help of what the problem could be

What car, what engine, how old? No one can help you answer that question, seems fairly obvious thing to do.

Get it tested for an ECU fault. It sounds similar, if not the same as a problem which I had with my 1.2 16v. In my case it was a faulty cranshaft position sensor, but I wouldn't recomend you go buying random new sensors as they are pretty expensive.
