engine = smoking real bad

had the head off today, bores are perfect, except oil everywhere, so looks like rings are ok, all head is new, valve seals etc
where the hell is the oil coming from?

all cylinders are oily, but 3&4 are worst, apparently the head bolts were tight, but not 'tight' if that makes sense

help!!

i've seen it on one of those, where the bores are fine but the piston rings are not. If you have a new head then doubt it is that. Also you said the head bolts were not tight. It that is the case then oil would be leaking on to the outside of the block too.

i thought i'd rebuilt it all.

it filled a full size workshop (2 ramps plus space for a 3rd car) in 10-15minutes with smoke

ran smooth as a nut, just smoked

no, as it was assumed to be the rings as that was the only bit i did myself, the rest was done by a pro. the same bloke has the engine now to try and sort it, but cant find any problems. i dont want to have to pay to strip it all down to find there's nothing wrong

well, there must be something wrong! a bit of oil burning can be normal on a re-built engine during run-in but sound a bit more than that.

a compression test should show up the problem.

there is something wrong. just cant find it! there was oil everywhere apparently. but no obvious source to the leaking.

compression test would mean putting it all back together though? how would you turn the engine over quickly enough without it being in the car?

nope, its all out on a workbench. going up tomorrow to do a bit of work myself to keeps costs down. might just take it all to bits myself and pay for it to be re-rebuilt and get it done with
