If i am going to use a mould to lay up some fibreglass how do i get the first layer to be smooth?

when i remove my layed up glass from the mould the layer that was layed first is going to be on the outside sort of thing.

I have seen gel coat which gives a smooth paintable surface should i use gel coat as my first layer in the mould then glass onto the back of that or do you lay it up then gel coat when it is out of the mould??

dont really want to use any filler to smooth it.

Also any advice for using grp to fill holes in plastic from what i have read it doesnt stick to well to plastic so i have to glass both sides??

you want some release agent and some wax

wax the mould then brush release agent onto it

leave that to dry and lay up in the order of

gel coat
surface tissue

as above, I use beeswax instead of release agent, just get a really polished sheen onto it. Dont use too much gel, just enough that you wont see thru it. start the layup when the gel is hardened, but still feels sticky to the touch (not so you can dent it, just so its not completely hard)

When you lay it up, make sure to roll it in properly.
