when having tbs fitted to an xe do u have to get rid of the dizzy 4 a coil pack?

no, you can still have a distributor with tb's, don't require electronic ignition.

the likes of sbd sell coil packs with their throttle body kits. what's the purpose of that?

Because you'll be likely to raise the rev limiter, at high rpm's the dizzy caps aren't as good as with coil packs. The rotor arm is moving so quickly there's less time for the spark to travel accross the points thus a weaker spark.

Also increasing the risk of misfire cause it jumps to the next point before discharge.
Also distributor caps wear faster on higher CR engines.
more space as may enigne are put in RWD cars and to mount as far back as possible the dizzy is plated and the coil pack put to one side.
Also acedemically speaking, less rotating mass on the engine too, so rev's up quicker, but that's a minor thing.
