Hi, Just been asked to define pros and cons and write a little bit about each database application below:

Oracle
SQL Server
Microsoft Access
Informix

Started on Oracle Pros, couldn't find a lot of information, so far got:
• Easy Setup
• It’s Free
• Separate Databases protect against Oracle Errors

MS Access.

Provides simple ways to link a database to a Visual Basic rendered front end.

SQL Server

Pros - Both enterprise scale (ie. loads of data, big structure), both support multiple connections to the same data, both support commit and rollback, no GUI so integrates efficiently with other apps; Java, VB if MS, web apps, whatever. Fully configurable permissions so per table, different privs within one table for different users etc.

MS SQL integrates with NT domain for authentication? Not sure any other reason to use it...

Cons - Difficult to set up, costly to administer.

Microsoft Access

Pro - cheaper and easier to use

Cons - shit

Informix

OK, Cheers Ian. Yeh i'll try to find out something about Informix, I might jst have spelt it completley wrong .

We will be using MS Access to produce this. I just have to write a bit about each one to like research the possibilities or whatever.

Your conclusion will probably be that you don't need fancy locking or commit/rollback and that you like Access interface with forms/queries etc. nice and point and click.

Disappointed MySQL isn't in there though, ask your tutor why the db powering this forum and many other web applications around the world isn't in your list but a company more famous for managerial blunders than fast queries is.

Asked the tutor about MySQL.

Answer he gave was. We need to use Access. We're just exploring the possibilities. He says MySQL is better than Access . A couple of cons he gave is we have to get a copy and put it on the system etc. Then teach everybody to use it.

Oracle is not free. An Enterprise license is STUPIDLY expensive...

They may provide a download link but that's for developers
