just fitted a 1.6 16v everything is connected up all wires etc, i think 
when i go to turn it over it just clicks and that is it. thot might be the battery, stuck the charger on it but still the same
any ideas

does the engine management light flash? could be a dodgy earth. put a jump lead from the - on the battery to anywhere on the engine

thats a starter problem matey, check the earths on the starter/alternator loom

isnt clicking just makes one click/clunk noise and that is it 
will a battery from a 1.2 be powerful enough to turn it over?

i had a clicking from the starter motor. quite rapid.
i didn't believe that it was a flat battery.
tried jumping it from another car, and the earth trick, both with no luck.
charged the battery for a few hours and it jumped to life.

the starter motor clickin does not mean that it is fcuked
its just the solenoid engaging and this the clicking
got main earth from gearbox to chassis?
make sure everything connected over n over again...
check starter motor wiring.......very easy to get wrong way round

if i remember rightly......at the front of the gearbox.....near the passenger side......and bolts onto the front cross member......its quite a thick cable.....with a terminal each end

should the starter come off easily after the two bolts are undone?

ther maybe 3 bolts/nuts........2 from one side of the starter...and one from the other side........thn it should just wiggle loose

right the starter was fucked, put old starter on andd it is turning over  seems like it wants to start but i dont think it is getting a spark put new plugs in but still no luck??
