For your money Steve you may be better off with a Discovery 2 (td5, traction control etc) and you'll get a nice spec one for your money too. Underneath they are exactly the same as a defender but on a 100" chassis.

It would depreciate more than a defender though.

All fixed now, yeah play in the UJ. Difficult to find and then when I did they were mega bucks.

Edit - although need to investigate some uncommanded braking from one of the front calipers and it would appear £20 will buy a pair. So its not all bad news.

What about a P38? Can get a noisy shit rattley one for cheap as you're not bothered by luxury. 2.5DSE

Oceans of room and nice to drive.

Doubt it can be that bad, could understand the 4.6 as my dad's one blew up at 3 1/2 years old, cost 7k to fix. But the diesel is an old BMW engine iirc, second hand parts plentiful and a compressor for air suspension is about £400? So that's a worst case scenario.

It WILL break basically every day though

A 400 quid compressor is a 1500 quid garage bill.

They are more prone to issues than a disco/fender though.

Pretty sure they're mostly if not all auto boxes too which would be an expensive fix.

That's all well and good, if they were priced accordingly. What's the point in paying 10k for a Defender when for half the price you could buy, for example, a 2006ish Grand Cherokee with climate control and heated seats for the snowy days when you intend on using it? Balls to paying more money to be cold and cramped.

Get a P38 converted to springs instead of air and you're away.

Land cruiser or something jap
If you have 10k I'd get an x5 3.0d for around 7k mark (quick but probably shit off road)
Or a vw toureg v6tdi but apparently the engines are horrible to work on

Stay away from disco td5's they are common for heads cracking and pissing diesel into the sump (internal injectors) and eventually running on there own oil and blowing up

Will buying a Land Rover Defender mean you can earn more than the cost of the outlay on the vehicle by being able to get to work an extra 4 days of the year if it snows?

I often think about getting a land rover etc, but then i often think its a case of the grass is always greener on the other side and i'll end up with something that is slower, bad handling, boring to look at and pretty dull overall, the only advantage i see is i could drive through bigger puddles, i'll be paying more for tyres, using more fuel, probably more tax and i bet it breaks just like any car.
