Buy awful to drive.

Even the 300tdi is flat without the fuel pump tweaks.

Never driven one but always hear that they are barely more refined than a defender and I know they are particularly bad on fuel.

These are one of the best spec'd 'Commercial' vehicles you can buy... Not the most reliable in the world but you wont want to kill yourself after driving it 100 miles.

Get yourself to a specialist commercial vehicle auction. Loads of public sector bodies use and run defenders and many are disposed for what is value for money imo. I guess average age will be 7-8 years old with about 50k on the clocks from experience.
