30/12

been doing a bit more investigation into the tapping, i reckon the lifters are playing up. never played up in the other hundreds of times ive rebuild the engine though.

on idle it has a slight tapping noise which increases with revs. we dont think we lined the oil hole on the head to the hole on the lifter so we are hoping this could be the reason for the tapping?

Oh my god Martin, this has been an up and down trip reading through your project. If it was a movie it would have been "Lord of the Arden blue GSI"

Glad it has turned out to be a happy ending for you

PS.

Did you get your intake hose with the MAF plug fitted, or have you fitted it yourself? As I need something like that when fitting my own powerbox to my x14xe.

Lifters can take a while to fill up if they've been left sitting dry for a while, has it got any better?

Seems a bit better now , still smoking out the back though, but it's overfuelling so much I'm hoping its black and not blue smoke. Most likely gonna be selling it in the summer so just gonna look at a few things but fed up with spending fortunes on it again.

The maf hose is part of a breathing mask apparatus. You know some people have air canisters and have to breathe from them , that's the pipe the air travels through to the patient .

Still no change mate , 160 miles now it doesn't get worse when the car gets hot luckily. Will get round to having a look eventually I guess.

Hi Martin, just been having a read!! when you refitted the followers mate, they didn't have to line up
with the oil ways in the head.
the followers rotate every time the cam presses them down.
when you took your followers out!, they should be submerged in new oil other wise they drain.
Drain your oil out Martin, put half hydraulic oil to half Diesel! making up to the correct amount for the
engine, run on tick over for half an hour, then drain.
replace/new oil and filter.
should now be quiet.
hope this helps mate.

Holy shit mate. I opened the link in you sig as I'm currently rebuilding a 16XE myself and was getting some inspiration. Found myself reading through this whole nightmare you've had with it! That's insane what you've gone through with this engine, it's incredible that you stuck with it!

I really hope this has sorted it for you now at last! I look forward to seeing what power this engine is making too It's a stunning car and it looks immaculate in the bay
