nope..never, i also dont have antivirus, i tend to find most AV picks up on stuff that isnt even a virus

Firewalls can also be helpful incase you get hold of a worm or anything like that. If it tries to connect to the web then it would allert you.
It also helps you control what applications connect to the web. If you don't want certain apps connecting then you can block then.
Unless you are VERY computer savy with a good backup proceedure I would not run a machine without a firewall.
The only machine I have on my system without ones are single use ones i.e. HTPC only used for video playback or server only used for downloads and file serving.

So somebody could gain access to the file server and easily place some file that you would automatically open, that automatically disables and firewalls etc on your firewalled system

Eh - 1st good luck accessing my server. Its locked down very well. I know exactly what files are there. If there are files I did not know about I would be very warey.
Even if you got on and managed to run it can you explain how it could disable my firewalls on other machine?

From what I have gathered from this thread, it seems to me like I need to free the ports in AVG. As stated, the free edition does not allow you to do this, but AVG Pro does.
So my options are -
Ditch the firewall (im a little wary of this - yes maybe I am a paranoid mofo)
Acquire a new firewall (for free) that allows you to open ports. Any suggestion?
Im currently downloading at a whopping 7kbps

Gawd you pleb.
Your port forwarding settings will be stored on the router as before, all thats happened is that you have lost the static IP address your PC would have been assigned when port forwarding was set up.
You just need to find that IP addy from the router config panel and put it back!
