As my current Dell one is nearly 4 years old and dog shit.

So i'm thinking a new slim one like so?

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/173555

Or shall i just go for a dell again like so?

http://www1.euro.dell.com/uk/en/home/desktop-inspiron-545_headless_rec/fs.aspx?refid=desktop-inspiron-545_headless_rec&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1

Or can anyone recommend anything else? All i need it for is internet, downloads, maybe an odd film and just general odd stuff. So i don't want to pay loads tbh

DIY is where it's at. Compare that PC World one to Ebuyer, it may be cheaper and you will get better after-sales support. One might refer to the average PC World employee as a "window licker".

I wouldn't personally buy a Dell but it may be perfectly good for your needs.

Do you have a rough guide price for a budget mate?

I'll say £300 as a rough guide. Can go higher but obviously would like it to be low as possible.

As for building one, I have no idea where to start, what i need etc

I think we had a HP laptop a while ago and they are big pieces of poo so I wouldnt be suprised. My comment was purely based on their workstation/desktop range, I started to use them at work and all my clients use them, I even got my mum to buy a couple of them for her office/shops and they work faultlessly

If you want to go down the DIY route there is plenty of people on here, including me, who can walk you through it

edit - I would thoroughly recommend DIY as well, that way you know the parts you are putting in are decent quality, obviously you dont get the manufacturer guarantee covering the entire system, but each individual part comes with its own warranty

Places I used to work at had desktop Compaq/HP boxes and they seemed to work well. No idea why their laptop build quality is so shit though.

Fort? What like a castle? lol..

Building PC's is a waste of money these days, just spend £350-450 on another one from DELL, keep it for 2-3 years then get another one

Completely agree. For the hassle of deciding what you want, buying all the bits seperately and faffing around installing everything its just as cheap to buy a pre-built.

The few exceptions of course being where you really know what you're doing or what something very specific.

Mate, if you bought the bits I would put it together for you if you want.

This is true, but good RAM and graphics cards often come with lifetime warranty

Why, when a lot of new machines that have Vista on bought now get a free upgrade for Windows 7 when it's released, just like they did when Vista was released.

Fair enough mate, I wouldn't mind doing it though, love that sorta thing

If you get the PC World one, don't whatever you do get Norton :mad :It disgusts me how they can try and sell it to you at every opportunity, what with it being about as protective as putting a sausage/rasher of bacon/other inanimate tasty object next to the computer and telling it to protect it from viruses.

True it's just that I'm fussy and would like a clean fresh install of 7 rather than an upgrade from Vista

For an anti-virus? Avast! is free for the home edition, but if you want to pay for something then Kaspersky is pretty good.

Well, am sorry my English wasn't correct, no need to take piss was they?

Building a pc is simple really, its common sense where every think goes. As long as you have the driver's for each thing you will be sorted.
