driving along i can hear horrible scraping/scratching noise. sounds like metal on metal

dunno if its related but when i was changing the water in my system i jacked the car up at the front and both front wheels were off teh ground. the engine was running to circulate the water. the front left wheel was spinning quite freely but the right front was rather stiff and didnt want to move much

anyone got any suggestions?? oh and i cant afford to take my car to a garage right now, so if it does need repairs ill have to do it myself

where is the sound coming from? coz i had a scraping noise from the front wheels, it turned out my brakepads had worn down to the metal clip which scrapes on the brake disc to tell u ur brake pads need changing.

hmm, might be that. but i wudnty immediatly think of that cos i was told the car had a service + MOT before i baught it in march :s if i take the wheel off will i be able to tell if my pad is worn down that much. can i replace the pad myself? easily?? if one pad is replaced does the other one need changing aswell?

cheers guys

its easy to do, you have too change all four, ie both on both sides or you get uneven brakeing.

okey doke. me not noeing much about cars, is it possible to buy better pads that will give better braking perfromance than standard. im sure i saw TD owners saying that standard brakes are boolx and i almost discovered this the other day by getting very close to the arse end of a porsche

i binned my standard brakes, its not that the pads are crap, its the fact that the brakes fade cos they have solid discs. at the moment ive got some from 1.4 16v models, they are the same diameter but are vented discs, a million times better. oh i think m2rv_h is selling some with reddot discs for 30 quid, calipers included etc...

how will they know, its genuiene vaux calipers and the discs and pads are there for maintenance items. you dont have too declare different discs and pads.
