1. Disable System Restore (right-click on My Computer, System-Restore tab in XP), then reboot.
2. End the "msblast.exe" task in your process-list (accessed by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del).
3. Remove the "msblast.exe" task from your registry (regedit, then HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, delete "msblast.exe" if it's there), reboot.
4. Engage firewall and set to most secure setting (if you don't have one, you SHOULD have)
5. Connect to the net, and update your anti-virus to the absolute latest version (including virus-pattern). Do a full system-scan, delete any infected files (this can be done with special programs, there's one on Symantec's website and I think one on Mcafee's aswell).
6. Restart again, and this time, be more careful which email-attachments you open!

But the thing is most ppl dont no how to do most of this stuff thats y they bought the patch out simply run it and thats it

Might be an "older" version, but the patch I downloaded only checked files for viruses......it didn't touch the registry, or disable system restore (and delete the backup-configuration files), or update your anti-virus program to the latest version!

symatec has it sorted on there site
pop into pc wprl and ask for the 'blaster remover' patch and tool

It also scans on port 4444 once infected, since my firewall is getting inundated with scans (and blocking them)......and my machine's not infected, which is nice!

Its not a virus and that's y virus scanners don't find it. It's a buffer overrun bug. The patch has been out for months. If u can't dl the patch before your comp shuts down do this. Type shutdown.exe -a in the run box when the shutting down box appears. That should keep the comp goin for long enough to dl the patch.

actually its a 'worm' that exploits the bug recently found.
danb: I believe it binds command.com to the port 4444 so intruders can telnet into it and get a command prompt, if you are getting hit on 4444 it probably means its people scanning for vun hosts, and theres alot of people doing that. Once its on your machine it will scan local subnets for computers nearby to fuck.
