I generally use Polycell Polyfilla, I have used the B&Q equivalent in the past.

Read on here another brand which you get a better finish when sanding it smooth. I can't find the thread so ask again.

No, just a few small holes to fill where things have been ragged off the wall in my new place.

Polycell Polyfilla will do what is required but if there is a slightly better product out there I will buy that on recommendations.

What grit sand paper are you using when your sanding it? You might need a finer sand paper?

Our first attempt at doing this stuff was with the B&Q home brand and some value sandpaper, end result was no better or worse than what my step dad did in his old place with all the top brand stuff?

Depends how deep the hole is. Polyfilla is usually used for deeper holes and you then use a product like easy fill to skim fill over the top

we find that the Wicks own brand Interior & Exterior Filler is better than the PolyFilla stuff.

One strike filler. Lightweight and flexable. I find it better than polyfilla for small touch up jobs
